…»The coinage of the so called “thaler period” of  the early modern and  modern periods (the late 15th century to the early 20th century) form the largest and best catalogued part of the Western European collection. The Hermitage holds a practically complete set of all the coin denominations of Germany, Great Britain, France, Italy, Spain, Poland, Hungary, Austria, Netherlands and the Scandinavian countries. Particularly worthy of mention are the first European thalers – the guldiners of Sigismund of Tyrol (1477–1490), the early 16th-century coins from Saxony called klappmutzethalers, the silver piedforts struck in Rouen for Henri IV (1589–1610), the remarkable 50-real pieces of Philip III (1598–1621) and Philip IV (1621–1665) of Spain, the Polish 14th–16th century donatives, the riksdalers of Gustav Vasa (1521–1564), the gold and silver coins of Napoleon (1801–1815) and the coinage of Scotland and Ireland before their being annexed by Great Britain.»

…»Such extremely rare coins as rubli, poltiny, polupoltiny, as well as yefimki with countermark are the monuments of the failed monetary reform by Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich (1645–1676), who attempted to change dramatically the Russian coinage based on the wire silver kopeck.»…
