| 127,128 The composition of early Byzantine gold coins and of some other early issues is 98% AU129 and one finds in no early gold coinage a copper content of more than 5%, probably because of the hardening effect of such an addition. The hardening of the gold coinage was done with the aid of silver which seems to have reached about 30%. A good deal (perhaps all) of the gold would have been natural, as it only has about 1% Cu and a maximum of 20% Ag. However, towards the middle of the seventh century we have examples of coins containing 59% and 69% Ag which must have looked very white. Lower denomination copper and bronze coins were also made in theByzantine and Arab mints.!» |
